Leveraged ETFs

Leveraged ETFs use financial derivatives and debt to amplify the daily returns of an underlying index, typically by 2x or 3x. These funds are powerful tools for short-term traders who want magnified exposure to market movements without using margin accounts, but they come with significant risks that make them unsuitable for most long-term investors.

Popular leveraged ETFs include TQQQ (ProShares UltraPro QQQ), which provides 3x daily exposure to the NASDAQ-100, UPRO (ProShares UltraPro S&P 500), which delivers 3x daily returns of the S&P 500, and SOXL (Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bull 3X Shares), which offers 3x leveraged exposure to the semiconductor sector.

Leveraged ETFs are designed for single-day holding periods. Due to daily compounding, these funds can deviate significantly from their expected multiple over longer timeframes, especially in volatile or sideways markets. In a choppy market, a 3x leveraged ETF can lose money even when the underlying index is flat, a phenomenon known as volatility decay. TQQQ has attracted a large following among aggressive traders due to the NASDAQ-100's strong trending behavior, but it lost over 75% during the 2022 drawdown. These instruments require active monitoring and strict risk management.
