SPDR (pronounced "spider") is State Street Global Advisors' ETF brand and holds a unique place in ETF history as the creator of the first U.S.-listed ETF. The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust, launched in 1993, pioneered the ETF structure and remains one of the most actively traded securities in the world. State Street's SPDR lineup includes broad market funds, the well-known sector Select SPDRs that slice the S&P 500 into individual sectors, and a range of fixed income and specialty products.
SPY is the flagship SPDR product and the most liquid ETF ever created, with massive daily trading volume that makes it the preferred vehicle for institutional traders and options market participants. GLD is the largest physically-backed gold ETF, providing investors convenient access to gold as a portfolio diversifier. XLF is one of the most popular sector ETFs, offering targeted exposure to financial services companies within the S&P 500.
